Workshop: Accessibility Strategies for a more Inclusive Canadian Archive
April 2, 2025 - 1-3 pm ET via Zoom
The current rate of disability in Canada is around 27%. This is a rate increase of 5% within the last 5 years. Archives need to be proactive in offering support, employment opportunities, and services to the increasing number of disabled Canadians. Archives in Canada, like much of the world, are currently behind when it comes to discussions around accessibility and implementing best practices in their policies and procedures. This workshop is a starting point to address these accessibility gaps. Language around disability can be interweaving, so also included n this workshop is neurodiversity and chronic illness. this workshop brings a person-centred approach to archival accessibility that not only includes users but also donors, staff, interns and students. The workshop will be centred around themes that include accessible programming, cataloguing, archival digital/physical spaces, training and equitable hiring practices. Note that this workshop is not meant to be academic in nature, and is instead an opportunity for participants to collaborate on how their institution can better include disabled Canadians, neurodivergent Canadians, and Canadians with chronic illness.
Participants will leave the workshop with some accessibility strategies and action items that they can begin to implement within their own institutions. Current accessibility related resources will be shared.
Instructor: Dr. Michael Marlatt is a disabled film archivist, archival producer, and archival accessibility consultant. He received his PhD from York University's Communications and Culture Program where he examined accessibility gaps in moving image archival education. Michael has previously held archival accessibility workshops with higher education, broadcast archives, government archives, non-profits, and archival professional organizations.
Workshop will be limited to 20 participants.

This workshop will equip participants with skills for putting together job applications (resumes and cover letters) as a part of their career search strategies. We will discuss the "hidden curriculum" of job postings and job searches. We will also explore strategies for writing effective resumes, how to tailor resumes to a job, how to highlight transferable skills, and self-care during job searches. This workshop has been designed specifically for students and new professionals.
Materials related to the workshop will be provided ahead of time.
By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:
1. Understand and describe key parts of the hiring process.
2. Understand how to "read" a job description and identify the most important aspects of the job description.
3. Develop strategies for effective resume/CV writing; tailoring resumes to job descriptions, listing accomplishments rather than job duties, and identifying transferable skills.
4. Develop strategies for self-care during a job search.

This workshop will cover specific examples of collaborative tools, spaces and workflows with a focus on the open source community and ethos. it will give an overview of the various tools and open projects that are available to aid institutions getting started with A/V Preservation. Specifically, MIPoPS Co-Executive-Director Libby Hopfauf will cover the unique qualities, risk factors, transfer tools, and preservation workflows for some of the most common formats found in archives: VHS, DV, 3/4" U-matic, and Betacam. Hopfauf will cover tools and techniques to preserve each of these formats based on their distinct needs and characteristics.
Participants will leave this workshop with an intellectual understanding of videotape formats commonly found in archival collections. They will receive information and resources for further study and education, as well as practical examples for using simple techniques and tools to provide access to their collections, and an understanding of options for digitization, analog and digital preservation. They will also learn how to gather information to communicate with vendors and advocate for funding via grants or institutional buy-in.
