Communications Committee

The Communications Committee provides a vital role for the ACA by developing and delivering strategic communications in a variety of formats. The committee also works collaboratively with other ACA committees and bodies to support their communication needs.

The Communications Committee coordinates a number of ACA channels:

Social media: The ACA is present on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Threads and LinkedIn. Please use our communications form if you have news you'd like the ACA to share.

Scope and Content: Scope and Content, ACA's monthly e-newsletter, is the place to get current information about the ACA's initiatives, activities, and events. It is also a great way to find out how to get involved in the ACA and its many projects.

In the Field: In the Field, the ACA's blog, is where discussions about the scope of archives, archival education, and archival interventions happen. We publish mid-length articles (500-2,000 words) on a wide range of topics.

Commitment to Accessibility

The ACA Communications Committee has reviewed the recently published Equity Commitments. In alignment with the following Equity Commitments,

  • Equity Commitment 1: "The ACA will prioritize the urgent need for equity and justice for BIPOC (Black, Indigenous and People of Colour), people with disabilities, new Canadians, and 2SLGBTQIA+ individuals and communities"
  • Equity Commitment 4: "The ACA will actively work to make its programs and services accessible to an increasingly diverse archives and recordkeeping profession"

the Communications Committee has recently launched an accessibility task force to review existing literature and guidelines for to ensure best practices for accessibility our achieved through our communication channels. Using the WCAG 2 (Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 2), we commit to making content that is Perceivable, Operable, Understandable, and Robust.

In terms of our workflow going forward, we commit to the following standards for all communications platforms:

  • Alt-text will be added to all images
  • Captions will be added to all videos
  • Color contrast will be checked when conveying textual information through images
  • Camel Case (#ThisIsCamelCase) will be used in Hashtags, hashtags will only be used at the end of posts
  • Contact information will be available on each social media platform for feedback
  • We will create content in plain language.

We are actively seeking feedback and input from our members and the wider community. If you have any comments, questions, or concerns about ACA Communications and accessibility, please email us at communications@archivists.ca
