The deadline to submit proposals has been extended to Monday, November 4, 2019.

The 2020 ACA Program Committee and the ACA Education Committee invite proposals for workshops relating to all areas of archival practice for the professional development workshop stream. Topics may include decolonizing archives, working with digital records, policy development, project management or any other skills you think might support your colleagues in their work. Proposals for half- or full-day workshops are encouraged.

The ACA Communications Committee is preparing to re-launch a newsletter for the Association, as well as a new blog. The ACA Bulletin began as a paper newsletter in the early years of the Association’s existence, and in more recent years, was produced in electronic form as a PDF. In 2014 the Bulletin became a monthly blog on the ACA website. Changes in the ACA website took the blog functionality away for a period of time.

In order to meet the communication needs of the ACA and its members, the Communications Committee will be creating a monthly e-newsletter that will bring together news and association updates from the month, as well as articles that have been featured on the blog.

To mark the change in format, we are going to change the name of the newsletter…and this is where you come in! We are holding a contest to choose a new name. The Communications Committee will review the submitted suggestions and will choose their favourite three names; these top suggestions will then be sent to the ACA Board who will choose the winner.

Please send your suggestions to communications@archivists.ca by Friday, November 1, 2019.

The winning name will be revealed with the launch of the new e-newsletter at the end of November.

It is with profound sadness that the ACA has learned of the passing of Larry Dohey, archivist at The Rooms.

Larry was a remarkable ambassador for the archival community and for the history of Newfoundland and Labrador. Larry was not only a witty story teller and archivist but also a dear, wonderful friend to archival colleagues across the country. We will miss him very much.

The Association of Canadian Archivists wishes to congratulate Librarian and Archivist of Canada Emeritus Ian E. Wilson on his promotion to Officer of the Order of Canada, one of the country's highest honours.

Ian was recognized for his significant contributions to Canadian archives and for his published works on history, heritage, and information management.

He served as National Archivist of Canada, 1999 to 2004, and then as head of the newly amalgamated Library and Archives Canada until his retirement in 2009. His career spans many areas, including archival and information management, university teaching, and government service.

Ian holds three honorary doctorates, was made a Member of the Order of Canada in 2003, and was appointed Commandeur de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the Government of France. He is also a fellow of the Association of Canadian Archivists, the International Council on Archives, and the Society of American Archivists.

We are proud and delighted that Ian has received this most recent honour. Please join us in congratulating him on his promotion!

The Bulletin, June 2019 edition is online and available for members attending ACA in Toronto to review in advance of the Annual General Meeting on Saturday June 8th in the Churchill Ballroom, 4:30 pm to  6:00 pm, following the Closing Plenary.  Members are encouraged to read all reports as they will be part of the AGM Agenda as will the document entitled, Guidelines for a Graduate Education in Archival Studies.

The Association of Canadian Archivists wishes to congratulate Leslie Weir on her appointment as Librarian and Archivist of Canada for a four year term effective August 30, 2019.

We are very excited that Ms. Weir will bring the expertise and knowledge gained as Chief Librarian of the University of Ottawa, president of the Canadian Association of Research Libraries, and president of the Ontario Library Association to her new role. We look forward to the impact that her outstanding record of innovation, leadership, and success will have on Library and Archives Canada and to working with her on issues of concern to the Canadian archival community.

On behalf of the ACA Governance Committee, I am pleased to announce the slate of candidates for the Association of Canadian Archivists (ACA) Board of Directors.

The ACA Board is comprised of seven (7) directors, as follows:

• President (elected even years)
• Vice-President (elected odd years)
• Secretary (elected odd years)
• Treasurer (elected even years)
• Director-at-Large (internal relations) (elected odd years)
• Director-at-Large (external relations) (elected even years)
• Director-at-Large (Archivaria General Editor) (appointed annually)

With the exception of the Director-at-Large (Archivaria General Editor), each elected director serves for a period of 2 years, with the option to run for a second 2-year term. 

Regular nominations have now closed; however, the ACA will accept nominations from the floor during the AGM on June 8, 4:30 p.m. at the Chelsea Hotel in Toronto. A voting member in good standing may be nominated from the floor by any two (2) members in good standing, provided that the nominee indicate that they accept the nomination (in writing or in person at the time of nomination). 

The will be no proxy ballots for the 2019 AGM. In accordance with the election and voting policy, elections will take place through an online vote immediately following the AGM. This will be open for 7 calendar days and will give members who are not able to attend the AGM an opportunity to vote in the annual elections.

Elections will open on June 9, 2019. Stay tuned for more details.

The Governance Committee has received 3 candidates for the available positions. Please find their bios below for your review. 

Vice-President: Rebecka Sheffield

Rebecka Sheffield is a Senior Policy Advisor for the Information, Privacy & Archives Division (MGCS), where she part of a four-year transformation team tasked with modernizing recordkeeping, access and privacy management within the Ontario Public Service. Previously, she was appointed as Senior Lecturer at Simmons University, Boston, where she taught in the archives management concentration at the School of Library and Information Science. She was the first archivist to serve as the Executive Director of the ArQuives: Canada’s LGBTQ2+ Archives. Rebecka has been a member of the ACA since 2007, and has served on two program committees and as chair of the Strategic Planning Task Force. She is currently serving her first term as ACA Vice President, 2019-2019 and would like to be considered for a second.

Secretary: Jane Morrison

Jane Morrison is pleased to run for a second term as ACA Secretary. She has been a member of the ACA since 2005 and served as a member of the conference host team and program team twice. She is currently Associate University Archivist at the University of Victoria, where she has worked since 2005. Jane brings considerable leadership experience as a strategic planner and committee lead with both the national and provincial associations. She has held positions with AABC, including President, Vice-President, Secretary and Member-at-Large. Jane has been a principle leader in the ACA’s own strategic planning process and worked closely with the Membership and Outreach Committees.

Director-at-Large (Internal Relations)

Jeremy Heil has been the Digital and Private Records Archivist at Queen’s University Archives since 2001. He holds a Master of Archival Studies degree from the University of British Columbia and a B.A. (Honours) in History and Visual Arts from Brock University. Prior to working at Queen’s, he was employed as an archivist with the Chung Collection in Vancouver, and in the Private Records Section of the Provincial Archives of Alberta. He is former president of the Archives Association of Ontario, and has served on numerous committees locally, provincially and nationally over the years. He has taught workshops on electronic records, photographs and artworks in archives, and presented papers on various topics. Within the ACA, he has served as Chair of the Communications Committee, as a mentor, and most recently as Managing Editor of Archivaria. He is interested in shifting gears from his past work to take on a greater role in the governance of the Association, and looks forward to this opportunity to serve the ACA membership.

The 44th Annual General Meeting of the Association of Canadian Archivists will take place June 8th, 16:30, at the Chelsea Hotel in Toronto, Ontario. The agenda will follow this notice closer to the meeting date. 

Who Can Attend? Anyone is welcome to attend the AGM, but only eligible Individual Members are able to participate in votes.

What to Expect? The AGM is an opportunity for the Board, Committee Chairs, and Task Force Chairs to report on their activities over the past year. In addition, members may put forward motions to the Board that require member votes. This year, the ACA will also accept nominations from the floor for any of the three open board positions (Vice-President, Secretary, Director-at-Large).

Members will be asked to approve the minutes from the 2018 AGM. The 2020 budget will also be presented along with 2018 financial statements for ACA and the ACA Foundation. Materials will be provided as soon as they are available and prior to the AGM to provide time for review.

Elections. In accordance with ACA By-Law #2, nominations for directors has now closed and a slate of candidates will be made available for review under separate cover.

A voting member in good standing may be nominated from the floor by any two (2) members in good standing, provided that the nominee indicate that they accept the nomination (in writing or in person at the time of nomination).

The Governance Committee has committed to conducting a review of the 2019 AGM and elections to determine if the ACA by-law can and should be amended to support more efficient, effective and fair governance for the association.
