Planning for the 2024 ACA Virtual Conference is underway! Together with the Conference Program Team Chair, Jessica Bushey, the Program Team interprets and develops the identified conference theme into a Call for Proposals, which solicits session and plenary speakers. Based upon received and selected submissions, the Program Team then coordinates the logistics for a comprehensive annual conference that provides professional development, educational, networking, and training opportunities for ACA members and the wider archival record-keeping communities. The Program Team has answered some questions below to get to know the people behind the upcoming conference! |

What motivated you to join the 2024 ACA Virtual Conference Program Team?
With Jessica as the Chair, I knew everything would be run efficiently and creatively, and I was/am happy to work with her.
This year's conference theme: "Future Proofing: Centring Care Now for Archives Tomorrow" explores several topic areas. Which one are you most interested or excited about and why?

What motivated you to join the 2024 ACA Virtual Conference Program Team?
I learned a ton from the one ACA conference I attended in-person (Vancouver, 2021), and I wanted to learn about what goes into organizing a national conference like this and build some experience in that area. I was also excited to connect with others with more experience in archives and learn from them.
This year's conference theme: "Future Proofing: Centring Care Now for Archives Tomorrow" explores several topic areas. Which one are you most interested or excited about and why?
I'm interested in many of the topics but particularly excited to learn from presenters about their perspectives on the climate crisis. I'm passionate about both immediate responses to weather-related disasters and emergencies (my hometown flooded badly in 2023, so I have been thinking a lot about this), as well as bigger picture/longer-term thinking about how archives can work to minimize harms to the environment.

If you could have lunch with any archivist (past or present), who would it be and why?
I'm taking liberties with this question and going way into the past and also into fiction. I'd want to have lunch with Jocasta Nu, the Jedi Archivist from Star Wars. I think we could learn a lot about resilience and longevity in archiving (not to mention technology) from a Jedi Archivist. Plus, archives in space -- it just sounds like a great lunch conversation!

What motivated you to join the 2024 ACA Virtual Conference Program Team?
I have attended the ACA Annual Conferences for nearly twodecades, and it felt like the right time to contribute in a more meaningful way. Being the Chair of the Program Team is an opportunity to work with a diverse team of archival professionals and provide an exciting conference experience on a national scale.
I would like to add to my motivation for being the Program Chair the fact that the conference format is VIRTUAL. I believe the virtual format presents an opportunity for more people to participate in presenting and attending the conference.

What motivated you to join the 2024 ACA Virtual Conference Program Team?
When I volunteered to be on the Host Team for the 2023 conference, I was added to both the Host and Program teams by accident. Having now performed duties on the Host team last year, and with the advent of a virtual conference this year, I thought it a great opportunity to try on a different hat!
This year's conference theme: "Future Proofing: Centring Care Now for Archives Tomorrow" explores several topic areas. Which one are you most interested or excited about and why?
Social and Political Conflict. As a government records archivist, I face on a daily basis the emotional reaction that records can spark in archivists, and users of archives, including trauma.

Recently I've been thinking a lot about the elders in the community that I work for and the knowledge, histories, and stories they have.

What motivated you to join the 2024 ACA Virtual Conference Program Team?
I am a fairly new to ACA, and when I saw the call for Program Team members, I figured this would be a great way to meet others working in Canadian archives, in addition to learning more about ACA and current archives scholarship happening across the country more broadly.
This year's conference theme: "Future Proofing: Centring Care Now for Archives Tomorrow" explores several topic areas. Which one are you most interested or excited about and why?
All of the topic areas are of interest to me in one way or another. However, I am most interested in #5 Future Directions and Collaborations. I am really interested in how AI can be applied in archives to improve how we do our work, with the ultimate goal of transforming and improving the experience for archives users.
