Happy New Year, everyone, and happy anniversary to the ACA! As most of you know, 2025 marks the 50th year of the ACA as an organization. Over the past 50 years, the ACA has represented the needs and interests of archives and records professionals across Canada: providing opportunities to network, build professional skills, and participate in advocacy initiatives. As an organization, we continue to grow and evolve thanks to the support of our members. This month, I would like to highlight the work of our Public Awareness and Advocacy Committee (PAAC), who over the past couple of months have drafted several advocacy letters on matters affecting archives, records management, and access on behalf of members, and developed a Trauma-Informed Archives Resource list. I encourage everyone to read the PAAC update for more information. I would also like to mention that starting this year, I will be acting as the Board Liaison to the Nominations and Awards Committee (NAAC). This is in keeping with the NAAC Terms of Reference which state that the Board Liaison position will alternate between Board members dependent on upcoming executive position vacancies to prevent conflicts of interest. A big thank-you to our Vice President, Angela Fornelli, for all of your hard work acting as Board Liaison to NAAC for the past year and half. I would like to end my message by thanking everyone who has renewed their membership in the ACA for another year. Our members are what make our association strong, and we thank you for your support. If you have not had an opportunity to renew your membership, you may still do so. Please visit our Membership Benefits page for more information on how to renew/join. Respectfully submitted,
Anna Gibson Hollow, ACA President

Scope and Content is trying something new! In our ongoing efforts to foster connections across the entire archival community in Canada, we’re always looking for new ways for you (yes, you!) to get involved. Earlier this year, we began including a new segment called “Archivists in the News” to highlight pieces in newspapers, magazines, and social media that feature the work of Canadian archivists. Now, we’d like to try including your personal and professional voices more directly – even if you haven’t been in the news!
If you have something exciting that you want to let us know about, that you or your organization may have worked on; if you want to share a tricky archival problem that you recently worked through, or maybe still need help with; or even if you want to ask questions of us, the ACA Communications Committee – this is your chance to be heard! We’re looking for short paragraphs or blurbs that are less than 500 words and more casual than something you might submit to In the Field. You can either email us at communications@archivists.ca if you want to have a conversation with us to organize your thoughts, or you can use this form if you would like to submit anonymously.

Keep your ACA Member Profile up to date! We kindly ask all our members - both new and longstanding - to take a moment to log into the Association of Canadian Archivists website and update their member information. Keeping your profile current helps us stay connected and ensures you receive the latest updates, resources, and opportunities from the ACA community. Your engagement is key to our collective success!

Public Awareness and Advocacy Committee update
On December 4, the ACA sent a letter to the Government of Alberta opposing their proposed changes to the Alberta Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (FOIP) as outlined in Bills 33 and 34. Primarily, the ACA is concerned that the Bills, which have since passed into legislation, undermine the transparency of government decision-making. Specific concerns outlined in the letter (available on the ACA website) include:
As a national organization that represents the needs and interests of archives and records professionals across Canada, the ACA recognizes the importance of creating, preserving, and providing access to records as an essential element of a healthy democracy. Therefore, the ACA spoke out against the changes to the Alberta FOIP legislation, changes which will ultimately hinder access to government information thereby reducing government transparency and inhibiting democracy.

ACA Hashtag Party
You’re invited to the ACA Hashtag Party!
What is it?
On the last Thursday of every month, the ACA Social Media Team organizes a hashtag party, which takes place virtually on Facebook, Instagram, and Threads. There is a different theme for each month, which we announce on social media and ARCAN-L in advance. On the day of the party, you can share materials in your collections related to that theme, tag us and use the hashtag, and we’ll re-share your post. The goal of the parties is to engage more with institutions across Canada, see what kinds of materials other institutions have, and promote weird, fun, and interesting items from your own collections.
What’s the latest? The first ACA Hashtag Party of this year will take place on January 30, 2025, and the theme will be #ArchivesPets. For this party, we’re looking forward to seeing all your favourite materials from your collections that depict or are related to cats, dogs, and any other furry and scaly friends. On the day, share your materials, and don’t forget to tag us and use the hashtag so we can re-share your posts. We are also looking forward to celebrating with you for the rest of the year. The dates and themes for ACA Hashtag Parties in 2025 will be: - February 27, 2025: #ArchivesArtsAndCrafts
- March 27, 2025: #ArchivesSports
- April 24, 2025: #ArchivesPerformance
- May 29, 2025: #ArchivesFilm
- June 26, 2025: #ArchivesFamily
- July 31, 2025: #ArchivesImmigrants
- August 28, 2025: #ArchivesArchitecture
- September 25, 2025: #ArchivesUniqueItems
- October 30, 2025: #ArchivesWomensHistory
- November 27, 2025: #ArchivesEnclosures
- December 2025: [holiday break]
Keep an eye on future issues of Scope and Content and on all our social media accounts to learn more about what each of these themes mean! For any questions or feedback, or if you have initiatives that you would like the ACA Hashtag Party to support, please email us at communications@archivists.ca.
