Well said, Ms. Montgomery! What a month of celebrations and
commemorations we have ahead of us! National Indigenous History month, Pride
Season, Italian Heritage Month, Filipino Heritage Month, and Portuguese Heritage
Month, not to mention National Indigenous Peoples Day (June 21),
Saint-Jean-Baptiste Day (June 24), and Canadian Multiculturalism Day (June 27).
In a world so filled with uncertainty and fear, a month such as this – that is
absolutely overflowing with reasons and opportunities to celebrate humanity no
matter what your background or orientation – is indeed welcome!

Reminder: June 14 – ACA Annual General Meeting
Join your ACA Board of Directors on Tuesday, June 14, 2023 1:00 pm ET / 10:00 am PT for the Annual General Meeting. The meeting agenda will include board reports and an update on ACA activities, including committees, SISes, and Student Chapters. Members will also have an opportunity to review ACA audit documents and the ACA budget material.
This meeting will take place online, via Zoom. The agenda and supporting documents are available online in the May 2023 Bulletin.
The results of the 2023 election will be announced, and members will be able to meet the new ACA 2023-2025 board members.
Institutional members are reminded to ensure that a designated delegate has been entered into your membership profile to ensure your delegate receives the online voting link and information regarding the AGM.

Retirement Announcements & Warm Wishes
As many of you may already know, May 2023 saw the retirement of
both Fred
Farrell, Director-Provincial Archivist,
Provincial Archives of New Brunswick, and Dr. Luciana Duranti of the UBC
iSchool. I know I’m not alone in hoping these two amazing humans and
indefatigable colleagues stay connected with the archival community in whatever
ways make sense for them as their new lives take shape.
To Fred and Luciana, on behalf of the Board of Directors:
May the road rise up to meet you.
May the wind always be at your back.
May the sun shine warm upon your face,
And rains fall soft upon your fields.

ACA Strategic Framework 2023-2026
On Wednesday, May 31, the Strategic Planning Working Group (SPWG) presented the ACA Strategic Framework 2023-2026 at the members’ input session. The new strategic framework replaces Moving Forward Together: ACA Strategic Plan 2018-2021.
The new ACA Strategic Framework identifies three strategic priorities for the ACA over the next three years, which are to Advocate, Support Learning, and Engage Members.
The new framework is simpler than the previous strategic plan, defining three priorities and their relationship to the ACA without being prescriptive in how they are pursued. Instead, it is up to the Board, committees, working groups, SISes, and student chapters to define how their activities serve one or more of these priorities and to regularly report on those activities to members. With a simpler, broader set of priorities, the ACA will be better able to adapt to social change and the shifting needs of members as they arise.
Both the ACA Strategic Framework 2023-2026 document and the Strategic Framework Presentation will be available on the ACA website as well in the coming days. Thank you to the members of the Strategic Planning Working Group (Angela Fornelli & Chris Trainor (co-chairs), Allie Querengesser, Jesse Carson, Jill Teasley) for all of your hard work developing the ACA Strategic Framework 2023-2026 and to all of the volunteers and members of the ACA who provided such valuable feedback.

Call for Volunteers – ACA Professional Development Committee
The Professional Development Committee is looking for new committee members to guide and support the work undertaken to support community members with professional development initiatives, including workshops throughout the year and pre-conference workshops for ACA 2024, which will be online and anchored in Alberta.
Acknowledging the imperative for the committee to represent the needs and interests of the larger ACA membership, we encourage applications from archival and record keeping professionals who are:
- Indigenous, Black, or People of Colour, or from other equity-deserving groups;
-
and/or students;
-
and/or members who are new to ACA committees.
Time commitment and activities: The committee meets each month for one hour. This meeting time is set in advance with committee consensus. Committee members have the opportunity to shepherd workshops throughout the year based on their availability. This work may take 1.5 to 3.0 hours depending on the workshop length. Committee members are also assigned to be liaisons to the Annual Conference Program Team and the Conference Planning Committee. Committee members may also meet twice annually, once in the spring and once in the fall, as part of the ACA’s Planning and Priorities Process. Some committee members participate in the website renewal working group as well.

Volunteering with this committee is a great way to not only get better connected with existing colleagues in the ACA but also to develop new professional connections.

ACA Foundation
The ACA
Foundation is THRILLED to be hosting its silent auction during this year’s
conference! This online silent auction will raise funds for the Foundation so
that we can continue offering students and early-career professionals the funds
they need to join the ACA and attend our conferences. If you are able to donate
goods (homemade or store bought), please reach complete this form so that it will be part of this year's auction. All
donations are eligible for a tax receipt!

The ACA Foundation Board is pleased to announce the establishment of a new bursary for students and emerging professionals! Beginning this year, we will be awarding three (3) travel bursaries totalling $1500 for student and emerging professionals to attend the ACA conference. Priority will be given to those who are presenting at the conference, but everyone meeting the criteria is welcome to apply. This year’s successful candidates have been chosen, and we thank our membership for their continuing support!

ACA Hashtag Party
You’re invited to the ACA Hashtag Party! On the last Thursday of every month, the ACA organizes a hashtag party, which takes place virtually on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter. There is a different theme for each month, which we announce on social media and Arcan-l in advance. On the day of the party, you can share materials in your collections related to that theme, tag us and use the hashtag, and we’ll re-share your post. The goal of the parties is to engage more with institutions across Canada, see what kinds of materials other institutions have, and promote weird, fun, and interesting items from your own collections.
Last month’s party took place on Thursday,
May 25, and the theme was #ArchivesPostcards! We truly enjoyed seeing these
treasures from your collections. Thank you to everyone who participated!
The next party will take place on Thursday,
June 29, and the theme will be #ArchivesTransportation! Since this party
will be happening during our annual conference, we’re thinking about planes,
trains, and automobiles – and all the modes of transport you’ll be using to
wing your way towards us in Charlottetown. Or share the most fun example of
transportation in your collections. On the day, don’t forget to tag us
@archivistsdotca on Twitter, @aca_canada on Instagram, and @AssociationofCanadianArchivists on Facebook so we can see what you’ve got!

After several years as our indefatigable Membership Committee Chair, Kira Baker is finishing her term. Under Kira’s leadership, the Early Bird Renewal Campaign now includes special categories for students and emerging professionals; the mentorship program has seen its largest cohort of mentors and mentees ever; membership webpages have been reconfigured as part of the Website Renewal Working Group to make membership benefits and categories clearer to our membership; the Membership Committee undertook outreach in conjunction with the SIS Board Liaison to ACA student chapters and archival education programs; and a Volunteer Manual has been created to guide new ACA volunteers.
The Membership Committee (past and present) would like to extend the warmest thanks to Kira for her dedication!

Technology and Archives: The Unconference (TAATU)!
It’s the most wonderful time of year! Technology and Archives: The Unconference (TAATU) is back!
This year, the Technology and Archives Special Interest Section will be offering an online version of TAATU to ensure everyone who wishes to participate will be able to do so. TAATU is a yearly, casual, and informative event about archives and technology. Come present new ideas and work, and geek out about archives, tech, and digital culture with like-minded people! All are welcome – there is no need to be an ACA member to attend!

Conference Highlights: Opening and Closing Keynotes
On behalf of the 2023 Program Team and the ACA Conference Planning Committee, our sincere thanks to everyone who provided keynote speaker suggestions for this year’s and future conferences. For ACA 2023, we are pleased to be joined by two distinguished presenters, Julie Pellissier-Lush and Dr. Mary Louise McCarthy-Brant, as our opening and closing keynotes, respectively.
Julie Pellissier-Lush is PEI's First Indigenous Poet Laureate, a Mi’kmaq Knowledge Keeper, and a Lennox Island Band Member. She is an actress, author, and photographer preserving the history and culture of the Mi’kmaq for future generations. Julie is the author of Mi’kmaq Ghost Stories (2023), Amazing L’nu’k - A Celebration of the People of Mi'kma'ki (2023), Mi’kmaq Campfire Stories of Prince Edward Island (2020), and Epekwitk - Mi'kmaq Poetry from Prince Edward Island (2021). Julie will be presenting at the opening reception on June 28 and on June 29 for our opening keynote, “Mi'kmaq Ancient History told in Storytelling Fashion.”

Dr. Mary Louise McCarthy-Brandt is a Fredericton-based writer, educator, critical race theorist, and historian dedicated to preserving the histories of Black New Brunswickers. In 2023 she was awarded the Queen’s Jubilee Platinum Medal for her work in uplifting the stories of New Brunswick Black people from their arrival in 1783 to the present. In 2022, she received an Honorary Doctorate of Letters from St. Thomas University. Mary is the Founder and Executive Director of the nonprofit REACH in NB, Remembering Every African Cemetery’s History in New Brunswick. Her writings include the poem “Am I Free - A Tribute to Dr. Otilia Chareka 1968-2011” in Celebrating the Black Family: Resistance, Agency and Change (forthcoming), “Diasporic Negotiations: Experiences of Canadians of African Descent in Rural New Brunswick” in Black Writers Matter (2019), and “Black and Maliseet: My Personal Narrative” in Journal of the History of the Atlantic Region (2014). For the conference’s closing keynote on July 1, Mary’s talk is “A Sensitive Walk: Navigating Canadian Archives as a Black Scholar” (remote presentation).

Fifty years ago Prince Edward Island was busy celebrating its 100th anniversary as a Canadian province. Everything from Styrofoam top hats to commemorative whiskey bottles were churned out in honour of the occasion, “The place to be in ‘73” plastered on anything that didn’t move.
The Island’s sesquicentennial may be muted in comparison, but we couldn’t be happier to welcome you to Charlottetown for ACA 2023. Food and water were recurring themes in the Host Committee’s deliberations: We hope you’ll join us for a boat tour of the beautiful Charlottetown Harbour, a walk through the historic town, or a picnic on the shore at Beaconsfield House.
You can always reach the Host Committee through the Whova conference app if you’re in need of local knowledge. We’ll be sending out updates on the formal conference activities along with insider tips on dining, shopping, and activities.

Pre-Conference Workshop: Quill Work on Birch Bark
Quill work is an ancient artwork that inspired the Mi’kmaq, or the porcupine people, to create such beautiful pieces of art that are now kept in museums all over the world for their beauty and timeless creativity. In this experience you will be able to work with a skilled artisan and create your own decorative birch bark circle to take home with you while learning about the rich and beautiful history of the Mi’kmaq on PEI.

Artificial Intelligence and Archives: the I Trust AI Research Project will be led by Muhammad Abdul Mageed, Peter Sullivan, Luciana Duranti, Corinne Rogers, and Tracey Lauriault. They will explain the fundamental ideas on which AI is based, discuss types of AI tools available, and identify both the advantages and issues presented by their use on records and archives.

In May, we published a piece by Siham Alaoui about open culture data and how information professionals can collaborate to make data more discoverable.
Last week, the countdown to #ACA2023PEI began as we launched our conference presenter interviews, a series that’s becoming an annual tradition. In the Field caught up with Sarah Hanahem, a graduate student at McGill University who will be presenting in one of the student sessions. The Dodds Prize recognizes superior research and writing on an archival topic by a student enrolled in a master's level archival studies program at a Canadian university. To be considered, a faculty member or instructor associated with the program must submit a student paper and verify that it was written within the context of an archival studies program between May 1, 2022 and April 30, 2023. Submissions must be received by June 30, 2023. Papers must be between 5,000 and 8,000 words and written on an archival topic (broadly understood). The submission form and procedures are available here. Submissions will be judged by the Dodds Prize Adjudication Committee on the quality of their scholarship, creativity, and clarity of writing. The Adjudication Committee comprises the General Editor of Archivaria (or delegate), the ACA Board Liaison to Archivaria (or delegate), and two additional ACA members chosen annually by the General Editor. Delegates will be used in cases where a conflict of interest exists. Winners will receive a certificate, a cash prize, publication of the winning entry in Archivaria, and a listing on the ACA website. The 1931 Census is now
online!
Library and Archives Canada announced just yesterday
that the 1931 Census of Canada is now online. This is an important
moment for genealogy enthusiasts, and we encourage you to share this
information with your users and in your channels. They also encourage you to
begin browsing the contents of the 1931 Census and to share stories of your
community.
Currently, users can browse the digitized images by
district and sub-district. Later this year, LAC will incorporate the fully-indexed
and searchable images into its new one-stop-shop tool for national census
records: Census Search. This step will make
searching easier and more intuitive for all users regardless of their level of
genealogical knowledge.

Survey - Stress and its impact on digital preservationists in Canada
If you work in a Canadian memory institution and view your role as
being at least partially responsible for the digital preservation of
born-digital materials in the holdings of your institution, then you are
invited to participate in this research study about stress and its impacts on digital
preservationists in Canada. All digital preservationists in Canadian memory
institutions are invited to participate.
The survey questionnaire includes questions about stressors
related to the components of your digital preservation program; stress related
to your use of technology; the impacts of your role as a digital
preservationist on your stress and anxiety levels; your satisfaction with your
job; your susceptibility to burnout; and your perceptions of your levels of
generalized stress and anxiety. You will also be asked to identify your mood
and any symptoms related to anxiety and/or depression that may have recently
resulted from the stress of your work.

The National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation is hosting a dialogue with Connie Walker and Betty Ann Adam on June 13, 2023 at 1:00 pm ET live on the NCTR Facebook and YouTube pages. In 2023, Connie Walker's podcast, Stolen: Surviving St. Michael’s, won a Pulitzer Prize in the Audio Reporting Category and a Peabody Award.

Discovering the history of women in STEM: an international archives event Anyone interested in learning about Women in STEM archive initiatives in Canada, the US, and the UK is invited to attend an online session on June 26, 2023. This session is being offered by the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET), along with speakers from the Society of Women Engineers (SWE) Archive at Wayne State University and Canadian Archive of Women in STEM at the University of Ottawa Library.

#NeuroGLAM2023: Conference Call for Proposals
Neuro-GLAM-ourous Canada is seeking submissions for its first annual online conference, to be held August 11, 2023. Neuro-GLAM-ourous Canada is a Discord server and community where neurodivergent gallery, library, archive, and museum workers in Canada can share their interests, experiences, research, and support.
Presentations and panels may relate to, but are not limited to, the following topics:
- Research and professional work and ongoing projects
- Personal accounts of being neurodivergent in GLAM spaces
- Discussions of resources, forms of mutual aid, or peer support of potential interest to the community
- Employment issues, labour law, collective bargaining, and disability rights and concerns

In conferring this year’s award, the AAO specifically noted Appleby’s continued support and stewardship of its own Archives program, particularly with the hiring of professional archivists to care for the collection beginning in 2007 and the recent major capital investment, which funded archival-grade storage, climate controls, and fire suppression.
