President's Message

Welcome to April everyone!

I can’t believe it is just over 2 months until the 2024 ACA virtual conference: Future-Proofing: Centring Care Now for Archives Tomorrow”! While the conference website and program are still being developed, I have had a peek at the line-up, and it looks amazing! Registration is now open, and at $150 for ACA members it’s an incredible price point for such a stellar professional development opportunity! So don’t forget to register before June 10!

‘Tis the Season!

With conference season now in full swing, I’d like to give a shout out to our sister organizations, the Archives Association of Ontario, and the Archives Association of British Columbia to encourage folks to consider registering for their upcoming conferences as well!

  • Archives Association of Ontario’s 2024 virtual conference [REDACTED]: Access, Privacy and Addressing Ethical Accessibility, May 8-10, 2024, via Whova. Check out their draft conference agenda, and their registration pages. Registration fees are $100 for AAO members, $200 for non-AAO members.

  • Archives Association of British Columbia and ARMA Vancouver Island are hosting their 2024 Joint Virtual Conference "Going further together: Connectivity and partnerships in the information profession," May 29-31, 2024 via Zoom. Check out their call for speakers and proposals here (deadline is Friday, April 19).

Volunteers still needed!

Please consider volunteering for the ACA to re-energize your professional self, meet new people, learn new skills, and be part of your collegial community. Time commitments vary, but on average only 2-3hrs/month is required, and the rewards are exponential! We have many exciting committee positions that currently need filling:

The ACA Volunteer Form can be found here.

Warmest regards,

Erica Hernandez-Read

Vice-President's Message

As the year of 2024 marches into April (see what I did there?) and time seems to once again be at a premium it can be hard to stop and smell the roses. Sometimes we are doing so much work that it seems like we never accomplish anything but if we only take a step back, we can see that so much has been accomplished. I feel the same about the work being carried out by the ACA and all of it carried out by volunteers at that. It is really remarkable that so many moving pieces are coordinated and controlled, moving from what seems like chaos at times into something amazing and real. Being on the Board has been such an eye-opening experience and one which I am so glad I stepped up for. I realize not everyone is in a position to volunteer, so we on the Board are always appreciative of anyone who is able to make the time commitment, and we hope that every member is able to see all the hard work that is done by the special interest sections, the student chapters, the committees, working groups, and by the Board. It is always easy to look at all the work yet to be done and sometimes hard to see the forest for the trees but when we are able to take stock of everything, we can see how far we’ve come. The ACA of today is not the ACA of yesterday, and it is an honour and privilege to be one of the people that helps to shape what is gets to become.

ACA Hashtag Party

You’re invited to the ACA Hashtag Party! On the last Thursday of every month, the ACA Social Media Team organizes a hashtag party, which takes place virtually on Facebook, Instagram, and X (formerly Twitter). There is a different theme for each month, which we announce on social media and ARCAN-L in advance. On the day of the party, you can share materials in your collections related to that theme, tag us and use the hashtag, and we’ll re-share your post. The goal of the parties is to engage more with institutions across Canada, see what kinds of materials other institutions have, and promote weird, fun, and interesting items from your own collections.

Last month’s party took place on Thursday, March 28, and the theme was #ArchivesFeast! Thank you to everyone who joined this hashtag potluck – we so enjoyed seeing the presence of food in your histories!

The next ACA Hashtag Party will take place on April 25, 2024, and the theme will be #ArchivesVolunteers in honour of National Volunteer Week. We are looking forward to celebrating the amazing volunteers that support archival organizations across Canada, and the projects you wouldn’t be able to do without them! On the day, share your best materials related to volunteers and volunteer projects, and don’t forget to tag us and use the hashtag so we can re-share your posts.

The upcoming themes for the ACA Hashtag Parties will be:

  • May 30, 2024: ArchivesFavouriteFormats

  • June 27, 2024: ArchivesPlans

  • July 25, 2024: ArchivesBigAndSmall

Keep an eye on future issues of Scope and Content and on all our social media accounts to learn more about what each of these themes mean!

For any questions or feedback, or if you have initiatives that you would like the ACA Hashtag Party to support, please email us at communications@archivists.ca.

In the Field: The ACA Blog

From municipal and federal government to universities, from religious congregations to community organizations, archivists work in a variety of settings. This year, the ACA blog, In the Field, is setting out to talk to archivists across Canada about the unique joys and challenges of their work environments. We will feature a different type of archives each month, with the objective of showcasing the rich spectrum of archival work.

The Archives Spotlights series enjoyed a busy March as we focused on religious archives. Head to the blog now to read our interviews with Mary Flynn of the Sisters of Charity – Halifax, François Dansereau of the Archive of the Jesuits in Canada, and Rhiannon Allen-Roberts of Congregation of the Sisters of St. Joseph in Canada Consolidated Archives. In April, we’ll be exploring academic archives so keep an eye out for upcoming articles.

In the Field is always open for submissions! If you’d like to share your thoughts about community archives (or another topic!), or if you want your archives to be featured, reach out to us using the blog submission form.

Archives as Data: An Institute for Advanced Topics in the Digital Humanities for Archivists and Historians

The Institute for Social and Economic Research and Policy (ISERP) at Columbia University is coordinating a digital humanities workshop this upcoming summer entitled Archives as Data: An Institute for Advanced Topics in the Digital Humanities for Archivists and Historians.

Organized by Matthew Connelly, Professor of History, and Courtney Chartier, Director of the Columbia Rare Books & Manuscripts Library, this National Endowment of the Humanities (NEH)-funded program will offer practical training for historians and archivists in processing and analyzing textual data. Participants in the Archiving Digital Records workshop, designed for archivists, will learn how to use new technology to improve the description and arrangement of digital or digitized records, especially PDFs, and provide users with new ways to access them.

Participants will come together in seminar-style discussions on the novel challenges posed by doing archival research in the age of “big data.” The workshop will occur from June 10-21, 2024, at Columbia University. Attendance is free and the ISERP are funding travel and accommodation for participants in need.
