Welcome to August, everyone!
I don’t know about you, but I can’t believe summer is already half over – what a busy time of year it’s turned out to be!
Planning & Priorities Meeting: Preparations for the Fall P&P (aka Planning & Priorities) Meeting have begun, and the dates have been set. Over the course of two days, October 14 & 15, 2022, Directors will meet with Chairs and members of ACA Committees and Working Groups to discuss priorities, address challenges, and encourage cross-committee collaboration. This important bi-annual meeting lays the foundation for the incredible work undertaken by our committees and working groups over the course of the following 12 months. If you’ve been thinking about putting your hand up to join an ACA committee, pre-P&P is the perfect time to do it! Changes to Membership Fees: A Special Meeting of Members has been set for November 16, 2022, 10:00 am (PT) / 1:00 pm (ET), so please set aside this date/time to attend. At this important member’s input session, you will be encouraged to share your thoughts on proposed changes to both Individual and Institutional member bands and fees. Documentation outlining recommended options for changes to fee structures will be provided to members well ahead of this meeting date to allow for full consideration of options and to better understand justification.
Office Vacation Closure: Please note, the ACA Office will be closed from August 12-19, 2022 inclusive. So please be patient if you send a request to the Secretariat during this time - someone will get back to you as soon as possible.
In the Works: The Board is currently working on finalizing several new initiatives that will hopefully be ready to announce in the September Scope & Content, including: - The creation of a new Conference Planning Committee;
- The establishment of a reciprocal membership agreement with another national archival association; and
- A Fall Ancestry lunch & learn session.
Until the next update, if you have any concerns or suggestions for new initiatives you would like the ACA to undertake, please don’t hesitate to reach out! Your Board wants to hear from you.

As part of the ACA's work on Equity Commitments, the Governance Committee is updating the Conference Policy to reflect online, hybrid, and in-person options. The ACA Board of Directors is also working to restructure conference activities to clarify roles of team members within a Conference Committee. As of July 31, the response rate for this survey was significantly lower than in previous years. To support this work, the deadline for the post-conference survey has been extended to August 22, 2022. Please consider responding if you haven't already done so. Your feedback is invaluable to future planning. The survey should take about 10 to 15 minutes to complete.
The information you provide will help us to learn about your experiences as attendees, exhibitors, session speakers, and session chairs. With this survey, we wish to learn about the strengths and weaknesses of this format. We are also hoping to update our Conference Operations Guides, to respond to the directions and suggestions of attendees, and to develop checklists and training material for future conferences. |

Although the 2022 ACA Conference is still fresh in our minds, it’s never too early to mark your calendars for next year’s gathering in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, from June 28 to July 1, 2023. This will be a fully in-person conference.
The July 1 weekend will be bustling on PEI, not only with our conference but with tourists and many Islanders returning for family gatherings. If you are planning to attend, please consider booking your accommodations soon. For the 2023 Conference, attendees and their guests can stay at the Delta PEI, 18 Queen Street, Charlottetown, PEI, (902) 566-2222.
The room block at the Delta is open now and will be available until May 26, 2023. The ACA Conference room rates are available from June 22 to July 5, 2023. Information on accommodations, including a link to the Delta reservation system, can be found on the conference web pages.
More information will be coming soon, as planning begins for the first ACA conference in Atlantic Canada since 2010.

Special Interest Sections

Attention, members of the Special Interest Section on Religious Archives! Please plan to attend the SISARO AGM on August 11 at 3:00 pm (ET).
We are required to hold an AGM each year and must elect a Chair. Mary Grace Kosta has been serving as the Acting Chair, but an election is required. We will have a wonderful presentation by Janice Rosen on highlights of the Alex Dworkin Canadian Jewish Archives. The Zoom link will be sent to all SISARO members on the listserv.

Call for Volunteers
We would like to extend a call for new volunteers. The Finance Review Committee meets monthly to review and support the ACA Board of Directors' financial decision-making matters. Volunteers looking to lend or gain experience creating budgets and help brainstorm cost-effective and value-based decisions that align with the ACA's strategic plan and equity commitments are encouraged to submit an application using the volunteer form. All levels of experience are welcome.

Neurodivergent gallery, library, archives, and museum workers are invited to the Neuro-GLAM-orous Canada Discord server. The server is a place for neurodivergent GLAM workers in Canada (and our non-Canadian friends!) to share their interests, experiences, and support. Some tentative projects in the works are a Neuro-GLAM-orous Canada annual virtual meeting and a subgroup dedicated to making sure that neurodivergent GLAM workers' labour and accessibility needs are met and our human rights are respected. Bien que pour l'instant la plupart des message soient en anglais, les francophones sont présents et nous espérons que vous vous joindrez à nous pour enrichir la conversation.

Database of Archives’ Values: The National Archival Appraisal Board (NAAB) is very pleased to announce the launch of the Database of Archives’ Values (DAV) to archival institutions. Subscriptions for Canadian archival institutions are available for the yearly fee of $300 CAD + GST and $400 CAD for international archival institutions. DAV is an online research tool created by the National Archival Appraisal Board (NAAB) in partnership with the Canadian Council of Archives (CCA). Development was funded in part by the Council of Provincial and Territorial Archivists (CPTA). The purpose of DAV is to provide access to sales (market) information and purchases of archival materials by archives across Canada. Reputable dealer listings (values) may also be included, as well as relevant international market information. Currently, DAV contains over 1250 records of archival values. We would like to sincerely thank our participating archives, who contributed 422 of those sales precedents from their own archival purchase records. At this time, 75% of the entries on DAV document archival values at the item level, while the remaining 25% of DAV records describe purchases of archival files, collections, and fonds.
To subscribe to DAV, please fill out the subscription form, and within two business days, you will receive your unique login and password. Please contact NAAB@archivescanada.ca if you have questions or issues.

The AMIA Conference Committee invites proposal submissions for sessions, posters, and workshops for the AMIA Annual Conference to be held December 7-9, 2022 in Pittsburgh, PA. Deadline for submissions is August 15, 2022. The Call for Proposals Notes and FAQ explains the review process and offers information and tips on what the reviewers and the Conference Committee consider in the proposal process. The Conference Committee will hold office hours in August to answer your questions and provide advice about putting together your proposal and the proposal process. You can also contact the Proposal Help Desk with any questions throughout the process. The Committee has created a Google spreadsheet to connect individuals seeking ideas and/or collaborators for session and workshop proposals. The spreadsheet is provided as a means of communication only: the Committee does not monitor the document, and it is not part of the official submission process.

The Internet Archive has opened its Fall 2022 application period for Community Webs,
their Community History Web Archiving Program. They are seeking
applications from public libraries, local and community archives, and
other cultural heritage organizations in Canada. Community Webs is fully
funded by non-profit Internet Archive. There is no cost to
participating organizations. Community
Webs seeks to empower cultural heritage organizations to build
community-focused archives of websites, social media, and other web
content documenting local histories, with an emphasis on voices that are
typically underrepresented in the historic record. The program offers a
free multi-year subscription to the Archive-It web
archiving service, training and technical support, as well as resources
for networking, professional development, and in support of scholarly

The Digital Museums Canada 2022 Call for proposals is now open! DMC
provides Canadian museums and heritage organizations with funding and
support to create incredible online projects for their current and
future audiences. Along with funding, DMC offers expert guidance in digital accessibility, user experience, and inclusive design. The DMC website includes resources and inspiring examples of projects we have funded from Whitehorse to St. John's to Victoria. Apply at digitalmuseums.ca. Congratulations to the UBC Library, whose Joan Gillis fonds has been added to the Canadian Commission for UNESCO's Canadian Memory of the World Register: "The
Joan Gillis fonds includes 149 letters and 10 photographs from 13
different correspondents: all Japanese Canadian youth who had been
transported to internment camps and farms during the Second World War.
The teenagers wrote the letters to their friend and acquaintance Joan
Gillis, a student at Queen Elizabeth Secondary School in Surrey, British
Columbia, between 1942 and 1946. Their correspondence offers a unique,
youthful perspective on the war, shedding light on the internment of
Japanese Canadians and providing an exceptional insight into day-to-day
life in farms and working camps in Manitoba and Alberta. Joan Gillis,
who later became a teacher herself, kept the correspondence throughout
her life, donating the letters to UBC a year before her death in 2019,
age 91."
