President's Update

Dear Archival Colleagues,

The ACA is looking for new leaders. In the next few weeks, there will be a call for nominations for the Board positions of President, Treasurer, and Director-at-Large. The incumbents will serve a two-year term from 1 January 2021 to 31 December 2022. Read Loryl MacDonald's full update here.

The Ancestry Award is now open for nominations.

In 2015, the ACA entered into a five-year sponsorship agreement with Ancestry. Part of this agreement includes an annual scholarship that is developed and overseen by the ACA Foundation. The Foundation Board of Directors was unanimous in its decision to direct this scholarship towards the Indigenous community in Canada and to award it to a recipient studying in the field of archives or records management. New ACA Blog

It is with great pleasure that the Association of Canadian Archivists launches In the Field: The ACA Blog. The field of archives engages contemporary archivists in a multiplicity of environments. In the Field seeks to become a place where discussions about the scope of archives, archival education, and archival interventions happens.

In line with the ACA's Strategic Plan and Progress Toward a Diversity & Inclusion Action Plan, the ACA blog focuses on publishing posts that explore “frameworks, strategies, initiatives, programs and actions” undertaken across the archival realm to “address issues of inclusion, access, diversity, multiculturalism, and regional, national, global and intercultural engagement.”

ACA 2020 Conference Updates

What do humpback whales and archivists have in common?
They will both be migrating to Canada’s West Coast in June 2020! The humpbacks will join us for the cool waters and tasty fish, while the archivists will venture to the coast for thought-provoking plenaries and sessions, inspiring conversations, and perhaps a few cool beverages with colleagues and friends.

The ACA is hosting its 45th Annual Conference at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver, BC with formal conference sessions taking place June 11th to 13th, 2020. The premiere event for archivists in Canada, our 2020 conference theme is 2020 Visions: Seeing Archives Differently. This year, we are expecting strong participation with at least 350 delegates and guests from across Canada and internationally including the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia and New Zealand.

Paul Hebbard has been appointed University Archivist and Coordinator of Information and Privacy at Simon Fraser University beginning February 1, 2020. Read the announcement here.

A Tribute to Shelley Sweeney from Tom Nesmith and Walter Meyer zu Erpen and from her many colleagues.

Congratulations to archivist Dr. Shelley Sweeney who retired on 20 December as head of Archives & Special Collections at the University of Manitoba. Not wanting a traditional retirement party, Shelley preferred instead to make a farewell public presentation to “reveal” what goes on behind the scenes in the archives.
