Welcome to April!
And a hearty congratulations to one and all for persevering through all the challenges these past 12 COVID-19 filled months has thrown your way! While these trying times may not yet be over, each and every one of you have proven - time and time again - that with resilience, creativity, patience, tenacity, and kindness we will make it through…eventually.
On behalf of the ACA Board and Secretariat, I’m excited to inform you that the Member’s Tool Kit will be officially launched on April 15, 2021. This Toolkit, accessible via the Member’s Only section of the ACA website, will provide all members access to the Member Directory, conference proceedings dating back to 2006, and all minutes of the Board of Directors. In preparation for this launch, please check your membership info and settings to ensure accuracy of the information you wish to share with fellow members.
The Professional Competencies for Archivists Working Group (PCAWG) & the Professional Development Committee (PDC) are still seeking volunteers. Please submit your volunteer application form if you are interested in participating. Further to this call, student members were contacted directly this week in hopes that student representatives might also consider participating in either PCAWG or the PDC.
The Spring Planning and Priorities meeting (aka the “Spring P&P”) will be taking place this month on April 23 & 24. For those who may not know, this bi-annual working meeting provides the Board and the standing committees with the opportunity to work together to prioritize annual workplans, brainstorm new initiatives, and address any challenges that may have arisen. If you have any creative ideas or initiatives you would like considered, please reach out to myself, the Board, or the relevant Committee chair – we would love to hear from you!

Call for Nominations: Board of Directors
|
|
|
The Nominations Committee, a sub-committee of the Governance Committee, is seeking nominations for three (3) ACA Director (Board) positions that are up for election:
Full descriptions of Board positions and responsibilities are posted online. The term of office for these positions may begin July 2021 and continue until the end of June 2023.
The deadline for nominations is May 25, 2021. Candidates may submit this form with space for nomination signatures. Elections will take place online, in advance of the Annual General Meeting on June 22, 2021. Elections will be held using Simply Voting.
Directors must be individual members in good standing or may be the designated delegate for Institutional members who wish to run for Director-at-Large positions. Nominations must be supported by five (5) ACA members. Those nominated must also provide a brief biography that will be made available to ACA members in advance of the AGM. The ACA welcomes more inclusive representation in the composition of its Board and Committees and encourages the nomination of all qualified individuals including women, members of racialized communities, Indigenous persons, persons with disabilities, and persons of any sexual orientation or gender identity.
More information can be found in the ACA Nomination and Election policy, updated to reflect ByLaw changes approved by the membership in 2020.

Join the ACA Board of Directors on Tuesday, June 22, 2021 12:00 pm EDT / 9:00 am PDT for the ACA Annual General Meeting. The meeting agenda will include board reports and updates on ACA
activities, including the work of committees, SISes and student chapters. Members will also have an opportunity to review ACA audit documents and the ACA 2022 budget.
This meeting will take place online, via Zoom. The agenda and supporting documents will be sent out in advance of the meeting. The results of the 2021 election will be announced and members will be able to meet the new ACA 2021-2023 board members. The ACA Awards ceremony will again take place online this year in September. Stay tuned for more information and calls for nominations.
Institutional members are reminded to ensure that a designated delegate has been entered into your membership profile to ensure your delegate receives the online voting link and information regarding the AGM. 2021 Conference

The
ACA 2021 Conference Program Team is excited to share that the 2021
conference “Home Improvement: Building Archives Through Change” is open
for registration. Registration is also open for three outstanding
conference workshops. All the details can be found at https://archivists.ca/2021 With
over 100 speakers, facilitators, and instructors from Canada, the USA,
and Australia addressing topics such as collaborative community
archives, sustainability, archival education, digital records, critical
theory, and online description and access, our vibrant and inclusive
program will provide many opportunities for thoughtful learning and
development. Conference registration rates are as follows: - ACA Members and members of AAQ and ARMA: $100.00
- Non-Members: $200.00
- Students and precariously employed members: $50.00
A
number of free subsidized spots are also available to students and
precariously employed members facing financial hardship thanks to the
support of the ACA Board and donations from members. These are offered
on a first come, first served basis by contacting the ACA Secretariat at

Navigating Wikidata and Archival Description in Canada - A Panel Discussion
April 12, 2021 from 2:00 – 3:00 pm (EDT) on Zoom
Archival institutions’ enthusiasm for Wikidata has
surged in recent years, as repositories have invested resources into
the platform as a way of supporting authority control, vocabularies, and
collections discovery and promotion. This panel will explore how
archival institutions in Canada are adopting Wikidata as
a low barrier, easy-to-learn tool to create linked open data for
archival resources. This panel will discuss and explore their
motivations, project management workflows, challenges, and lessons
learned as they navigated the world of structured and linked open data.

Discussion: Impact of the Pandemic on Municipal Archives
April 16, 2021 from 2:00 – 3:00 pm (EDT) on Zoom
The
Municipal Archives Special Interest Section (MASIS) invites you to a
general discussion on the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on municipal
archives. This Zoom meeting will be an informal opportunity to meet and
share with colleagues.

Digital Preservation for Small Archives
April 14, 21, 28, 2021 from 1:00 – 3:00 pm (EDT) on Zoom
This workshop series (delivered in 2-hour sessions over 3 consecutive Wednesdays) will help smaller archives develop a digital preservation policy and plan that is suitable to their budgets and resources. Topics covered will include the National Digital Stewardship Alliance’s four levels of preservation, the Canadian Heritage Information Network’s Digital Preservation Toolkit, and the National Heritage Digitization Strategy’s Recommended Preservation File Formats. Example preservation workflows and the discussions of best practices (including the use of checksums, data migration and refreshing practices, and physical media selection and management) will be covered. The workshop, which will be divided into digital inventory management, preservation policy development, and preservation plan development sections, will include short Q&A sessions and knowledge-testing exercises.

ACA@UBC Panel Discussion
Panel 2: Documenting Injustice as it Unfolds | April 30th, 10am PST
In our second panel, we’ll be focusing on documenting injustice as it unfolds from the perspective of archivists, records managers, and memory workers. We’ve invited professionals from various backgrounds who have experience documenting and preserving evidence of state-sanctioned violence, human rights violations, and social movements to engage in discussion and attempt to answer questions posed by students at UBC’s School of Information. Consideration will be given to how the collection, preservation, and access of records related to injustice in its many forms impact such concerns as privacy, accountability, and trauma, as well as how an ethics of care may shape the future of a more informed and involved profession.

The Canadian Research Knowledge Network (CRKN) is pleased to share the Final Report of its Heritage Content Priorities Task Group (HCPTG) with CRKN’s stakeholder community. Formed in 2019, the HCPTG was tasked with developing principles, criteria, and recommendations to guide the development of the Canadiana collections (Canadiana and Héritage) and CRKN’s digitization, hosting, and preservation services.

June 7-11, 2021 is International Archives Week (#IAW2021) and this year's theme is Empowering Archives. The ICA invites archival and records management professionals and organizations to join them in a virtual conversation by
using the hashtags #EmpoweringArchives and #IAW2021 to discuss:

How archives empower accountability and transparency through access to information for holding governments to account and ensuring that citizens can protect their rights.

How networking and collaboration enable us to empower archives and the profession to help us achieve our goals and objectives for the profession and our institutions through the support of allied professions while helping other sectors and the general public understand what we do.

And how to challenge current archival theory and practice to make it more diverse and inclusive of different voices along with different histories.
