President's Message

Dear Archival Colleagues,

I hope that you and your family are staying healthy and safe. The dog days of summer are behind us and now it's time for September. To me, it has always been a month of new beginnings and celebration.

Along that theme, the ACA will also host its first ever virtual Awards Ceremony. Please join us as we honour recipients of the New Professional, Membership Recognition, and Honorary Archivist awards. We will also welcome new Fellows. Finally, there will be a very exciting announcement about the Outreach & Advocacy Award. The Awards Ceremony will be on Tuesday September 22 at 7:00 pm EST.

Also coming soon to a computer screen near you is the 2021 Conference Program Team’s call for papers. I am confident that the Program Team’s theme resonates with these times. Stay tuned for more!

As always, please feel free to call or e-mail if you have any concerns about the ACA or any suggestions on how to make your association better. We always appreciate your feedback!

Wishing you a happy and healthy fall.

Best Regards,

Loryl MacDonald, President

Mentorship Program Update

Jamie Sanford is the new Mentorship Program Coordinator and we sincerely thank Leslie Thomas-Smith for three years of leadership. Thank you to the 34 mentors and mentees who submitted feedback in our recent Mentorship Program survey. The Mentorship Program working group—consisting of Kira Baker, Sean Hayes, Jamie Sandford, Leslie Thomas-Smith, and Kelly Turner—will review the survey responses and implement changes to the Mentorship Program.

Young Canada Works Funding

The Canadian Council of Archives (CCA) is pleased to confirm that an additional $3.3M is available to fund archives and library Young Canada Works (YCW) positions on our current wait lists for 2020-2021. Due to this year’s extraordinary circumstances, the Department of Canadian Heritage (PCH) has also authorized CCA to increase the Young Canada Works funding contributions to a maximum of 85% of the total salary commitment, including total gross salary and the employer mandatory costs per youth employed through a YCW project.

CCA is in the process of contacting all project managers for approved and wait list projects, to revise budgets and assist with any necessary adjustments to their YCW hiring plans. While there will not be an official call for new applications, CCA will be creating a new waitlist for the 2020-2021 fiscal year, and will be accepting additional applications for internship job applications for graduates (minimum of sixteen weeks and ending by March 31, 2021) and short-term job applications for students – full-time or part-time positions (lasting six to sixteen weeks and ending by March 31, 2021). Potential YCW employers who would like to submit an archives (operating in FR or EN) or library (operating in EN) job application to this wait list should visit  to create an account and complete an application.

CCPERB Survey

A reminder that the National Archives Appraisal Board (NAAB) and Canadian Council of Archives (CCA) are conducting a survey regarding the new guidelines published by the Canadian Cultural Property Export Review Board (CCPERB). The deadline to complete the survey is September 18, 2020.
