President's Message

Hello from your new President!

Hello fellow ACA members. I am pleased and honoured to be starting my term as President of the ACA Board. Many of you may know me from my term as Vice-President of the Board from 2021-2023, or more recently as the Host Team Chair for the most recent ACA Virtual Conference. In addition to what is in my bio, however, here are some other things about me that many of you may not know.

  • I have lived in what is now known as Alberta for my entire life, living on Treaty 6 territory in Edson as a child, and then in Edmonton. I live here with my husband, my 13-year-old son, and two miniature dachshunds: Zorro, aged 16, and Rolf, aged 3.

  • Despite living my entire life in Alberta, I love all things nautical, especially tall ships. I have a collection of tall ship models displayed throughout our house. Last summer in Halifax, I got to help hoist the sail on the Tall Ship Silva while on an evening sail!

  • I have been an ACA member for 24 years and attended my first ACA Conference as a student in 2000 when we celebrated the 25th Anniversary of the ACA. Whenever I attend a dance at the in-person ACA Conferences, I always request Livin’ on a Prayer by Bon Jovi (you’re welcome).

  • During the pandemic lockdown I got hooked on Animal Crossing New Horizons and still love to play in my spare time. I even participated in one of the ACNH Island Hopping tours during the virtual conference in 2021. Feel free to visit The Hollow - DA-2280-3346-7850!

All kidding aside, I would like to thank outgoing President, Erica Hernández-Read, for her incredible leadership over the past four years. Erica is a passionate, dedicated leader and I consider myself fortunate to have served with her on the ACA Board. Following in her footsteps is a daunting task.

I would also like to thank the rest of the Board and Secretariat for everything that they have done and continue to do. I am excited to be working with such a great group of people again and look forward to serving our membership together.

Anna Gibson Hollow

President, Association of Canadian Archivists

Vice-President's Message

Another conference, election, and AGM has come and gone and incidentally it was my first for all three as Vice-President; thank you to everyone who attended as well thank you to all who voted in this years elections. Although things have slowed down a bit since then, we are starting to gear up on the board as we begin to work with the new President, Anna Gibson Hollow, and the new Director-at-Large, Adam Williamson. I would like to once again thank our former President, Erica Hernández-Read, for all her time, patience, and generosity of spirit that she gave and showed in her time, and to thank Andrew Chernevych  for all his work as Director-at-Large. It was truly an honour to be on the board with you both.

I would also like to thank all the members of the Conference Planning Committee, the Conference Program Team, and the Nominations and Awards Committee for their amazing work behind and in front of the scenes for an impactful conference. It was a lot of fun to be a part of it.

Thank you as well to ACA Executive Director Gillian Leitch and Membership Services Coordinator Maureen Tracey for all their hard work to help keep everything and everyone organized.

I look forward to my second year in my term of Vice-President. Let's see where this year takes us!

Angela Fornelli

Vice-President, Association of Canadian Archivists

Treasurer's Message

With the 2024 ACA conference firmly in the rear-view mirror, I need to say it: Wow! The generosity of ACA members is truly remarkable. Because of you, the ACA Foundation was able to provide over 62 subsidized conference registrations to students and precariously employed members – an amount totalling $3100! I'd also like to thank Artefactual Systems for their support of the Emerging Voices session!

I would like to thank everyone who helped make the conference a resounding success! This includes, but is by no means limited to, Jessica Bushey, Gillian Leitch, Anna Gibson Hollow, Jennifer Mohan, Maureen Tracey and so many more. I look forward to seeing everyone in Ottawa for our 2025 conference!

ACA Hashtag Party

You’re invited to the ACA Hashtag Party!

What is it?
On the last Thursday of every month, the ACA Social Media Team organizes a hashtag party, which takes place virtually on Facebook, Instagram, X, and Threads. There is a different theme for each month, which we announce on social media and ARCAN-L in advance. On the day of the party, you can share materials in your collections related to that theme, tag us and use the hashtag, and we’ll re-share your post. The goal of the parties is to engage more with institutions across Canada, see what kinds of materials other institutions have, and promote weird, fun, and interesting items from your own collections.

What’s the latest?
Last month’s party took place on Thursday, June 27, and the theme was #ArchivesPlans! Thank you to everyone who joined – we loved seeing the wide array of plans from your various institutions. If you missed it, you can still head to all our social media channels to see everything that we re-shared, or search for the hashtag.

What’s next?
The next ACA Hashtag Party will take place on July 25, 2024, and the theme will be #ArchivesBigandSmall. From maps so big they can’t fit on one reading room table to artists’ books the size of your thumb, we are looking forward to seeing the largest and tiniest items from your collections! On the day, share your materials, and don’t forget to tag us and use the hashtag so we can re-share your posts.

The upcoming themes for the ACA Hashtag Parties will be:

  • July 25, 2024: #ArchivesBigAndSmall

  • August 29, 2024: #ArchivesduCanadaFrancais
Please note that we printed a typo in the previous issue of Scope and Content, and this is the updated theme!

  • September 26, 2024: #ArchivesNewAccessions

  • October 31, 2024: #ArchivesBacklog

  • November 28, 2024: #ArchivesFounders

Keep an eye on future issues of Scope and Content and on all our social media accounts to learn more about what each of these themes mean!

For any questions or feedback, or if you have initiatives that you would like the ACA Hashtag Party to support, please email us at communications@archivists.ca.

In the Field: The ACA Blog

From municipal and federal government, to universities, from religious congregations to community organizations, archivists work in various settings. This year, the ACA blog, In the Field, is setting out to talk to archivists across Canada about the unique joys and challenges of their work environments. We will feature a different type of archives each month, with the objective of showcasing the rich spectrum of archival work.

We took a break from Archives Spotlights in June to focus on our annual conference, and will be publishing some conference wrap-ups that attendees generously shared.

Do you work in a type of archives that you haven’t seen featured yet? Would you like to be interviewed by the In the Field blog to showcase your work environment and your recent projects? Check out past Archives Spotlights posts to get an idea of the formatand reach out to blog@archivists.ca to participate in the series!

Archivaria

Call for Proposals: Archivaria 100: Legacies of Critical Theory in Archives

In recognition of the 50th anniversary of Archivaria and the 30th anniversary of the English language publication of Jacques Derrida’s Archive Fever: A Freudian Impression, this special issue look towards the legacy of critical theory in discussions on archives, particularly within the pages of Archivaria, and its impact on the far ranging and interdisciplinary landscape of contemporary archival thought. Born of the union between archival practice and what was alternately called “poststructuralism” or “postmodernism,” early forays into the critical interrogation of archival praxis were rooted in the effort to reclaim the theorization of “the archive” from the proverbial clutches of philosophers, postmodernists, and others not steeped in the quotidian struggles of stewarding cultural heritage and memory.

Archivaria was at the forefront of this new and syncretic force in scholarship, and rarely shied away from asserting the theoretical challenges posed by archives, and their implications for the cultural, historical, and socio-political landscape. In contrast to sister publications on the North American continent, Archivaria’s focus was pointedly dedicated to wrestling with the anti-foundationalist and boundary pushing work emanating from critical theory in the 1980s and 1990s, and its ramifications for the intersectional relationship of archives with feminism, queer theory, critiques of racism, and Eurocentric assumptions about history. Furthermore, this engagement with critical theory precipitated the necessary reconsideration of fundamental understandings and definitions of archives, and the entrenched praxes that had functioned as professional gatekeepers, laying the ground for a greater opening in archival thinking and practice.

This special issue, in turn, seeks submissions that are in conversation with this legacy of critical theory in archives and in Archivaria, but which moreover engage with the current and future use of critical theories to understand archives, the people that work with them, and their impact on the world. Even with the democratization of archival theorization and the increased proliferation of “archives” as a phenomenon across a number of disciplines, there continues to be a need for archivists themselves to interrogate the tools of their trade and to lead this critical conversation. We welcome submissions on a wide variety of topics, including:

  • Impacts (local, national, or international) of Archivaria on the discourse of archives and critical theory within the field as well as other disciplines

  • Contemporary and critical receptions to Archive Fever from the archival community, the humanities, and the social sciences

  • Legacies and contemporary locations of critical theory in archival scholarship and praxes

  • Conversations between archives, feminist and queer theory, and critical race theory

  • Relationships between critical theory, materiality, and archives

Guest Editors:

Mario H. Ramirez, Associate Dean and Chief Librarian, The City College of New York, CUNY, and  Rebecka Taves Sheffield, Head, Special Collections & Archives, University of Waterloo.

Submission Process – Important Dates:

  • October 15, 2024: Expressions of interest: Abstracts up to 500 words. Please email your submissions to: mramirez3@ccny.cuny.edu

  • November 15, 2024: Notification of acceptance

  • February 1, 2025: Full papers due

  • December 2025: Special issue published

Atlantic Canadian Queer/Trans+ Archives and History Symposium: CFP Submission

The Atlantic Canadian Queer/Trans+ Archives and History Virtual Symposium will bring together archivists, community historians, grassroots organizations, and members of academic communities to discuss a variety of topics relating to Queer/Trans+ Archiving and History in Atlantic Canada.

The Queer Heritage Initiative of New Brunswick (QHINB) seeks to pay homage to the Atlantic Canadian Gay & Lesbian Conferences that were held by activists throughout Atlantic Canada in the 1970s and 1980s. While these activist conferences were focused on the fight for human rights and resources for Queer/Trans+ people, the goal in hosting this virtual symposium is to restore some sense of connection between those in Atlantic Canada who are engaged in preserving the archives and histories of former Queer/Trans+ activists and community members.

This symposium will provide participants with the opportunity to share knowledge of their work relating to 2SLGBTQIA+ history in Atlantic Canada with each other and the general public. Any proposals related to Queer/Trans+ History in the Atlantic region are welcome!

Submit a proposal

Proposed presentations can take the form of:

  • a 20-minute individual paper
