Invitation to Register for Concordia University's Library Research Forum 2024 (Deadline: April 10, 2024)

You are cordially invited to register to attend Concordia University's 22nd annual Library Research Forum. Registration is free and all are welcome.

This year’s Research Forum will be a two-day hybrid event, with presentations taking place virtually on Zoom on Tuesday, April 16, 2024, and in person at Concordia University’s Loyola Campus on Wednesday, April 17, 2024.

The annual Research Forum provides an opportunity for librarians, archivists, graduate students, teaching faculty, and information professionals to describe and promote their completed or in-progress research, practical case studies or projects. The Forum also provides a venue for researchers to seek suggestions for enhancing their research interests, to identify potential new partners for projects, to test the effectiveness of their undertakings, and to promote research in academic libraries.

This year’s Keynote speaker will be Aaron Johnson – Associate Dean – Research and Infrastructure, Faculty of Arts and Science, and Associate Professor, Department of Psychology, Concordia – who will speak on the topic of Open Scholarship in Research.

The Forum is free to attend, but registration is required for planning purposes.

Deadline for registration is April 10, 2024.

To register and for more details about the event, including a full schedule, please visit http://library.concordia.ca/about/staff/forum

You’re invited to the ACA Hashtag Party! On the last Thursday of every month, the ACA Social Media Team organizes a hashtag party, which takes place virtually on Facebook, Instagram, and X (formerly Twitter). There is a different theme for each month, which we announce on social media and Arcan-l in advance. On the day of the party, you can share materials in your collections related to that theme, tag us and use the hashtag, and we’ll re-share your post. The goal of the parties is to engage more with institutions across Canada, see what kinds of materials other institutions have, and promote weird, fun, and interesting items from your own collections.

The ACA Hashtag Party will take a pause in December to give our volunteers a break, but we’re excited to host you again in the new year! The first few dates and themes for 2024 ACA Hashtag Parties will be as follows:

    • January 25, 2024: ArchivesScience
    • February 29, 2024: ArchivesBlackHistory
    • March 28, 2024: ArchivesFeast
    • April 25, 2024: ArchivesVolunteers

Keep an eye on future issues of Scope and Content and on all our social media accounts to learn more about what we’re interested in for each of these themes!

For any questions, or if you have initiatives that you would like the ACA Hashtag Party to support, please email us at communications@archivists.ca.

    Open Refine Workshop

Digitization can provide far greater access to archival documents, but their discoverability via full text searches may be hampered by error-laden optical character recognition (OCR). Correcting them manually is unrealistically time-consuming but there are tools that can help! In this workshop, we will use OpenRefine – a spreadsheet-like software often used for creating or editing metadata – to accelerate the finding and correction of spelling errors introduced through the OCR process.
